The seat is comfortable on its own, and even more so with a futon mattress – it provides a great night’s sleep! You may notice a grassy scent initially, which may return in humid conditions. I didn’t find it bothersome; I simply aired it out and kept a fan running when the scent was strong at first. No issues.

I purchased this tatami mat to use under my shikibuton mattresses. It’s easy to fold, keeps my mattresses off the floor and dry. I appreciate the non-slip bottom. The one I received had no odor. It’s comfortable to sit on even without a shikibuton or futon on top.

Overall, this was a pleasant experience and the igusa mat appears to be well-made. I’ve been wanting to try a traditional igusa mat for a while and finally did. Placing it on top of my Japanese futon, the scent was nice and gentle, reminiscent of fresh hay. The mat was well-crafted, smooth, and easy to fold. However, I have allergies to pollen, hay, and certain grasses, and I suspect the igusa mat may have triggered some minor allergy symptoms. It could also be due to other springtime…

I use this product on the hard kitchen floor while cooking. I don’t wear outdoor shoes inside like they do in Japan. The initial strong hay smell disappeared after a few weeks of being left standing up.

The product seemed nice in theory but unfortunately, it arrived very damaged. There is poor quality stitching with a 6” slice where the stitches and grass fibers were cut clean through. Unless it’s repaired, it’s in danger of ripping open further, and repair would be very difficult if not impossible. This was an international order and quite expensive. When I reported the issue, I was given an odd return label to a different address with no postage paid. Looks like a SCAM.
