Working with the Orange Chakra, known as the Sacral Chakra, will give you the insights, tools, and tips you need to bring your emotional and physical health back into balance. The Svadhisthana Chakra is waiting for you to unlock its power and potential.

What is a Chakra? Things you need to know about your Energy Center.

The Sanskrit word Chakra means ‘spinning wheel’ and it refers to the numerous spinning energy wheels that reside in our bodies. Each wheel is a specific energy center, that holds a particular energy. There are thousands of these chakras in our bodies, from our hands to our feet, our eyes, ears, and fingertips. But the main seven chakras, the most commonly known and spoken about, are the ones that run from the base of the spine up to the crown of the head. These different energy centers are aligned with certain points in the physical body and therefore affect the physical body, the mind, and the energetic body too.

The first chakra is the Root Chakra, which is located at the base of the spine, and at the tip of the tailbone. It is the base chakra, known for its grounding qualities and making you feel safe. Once this base has been established, you can move on up to the second chakra, the sacral chakra, which is located just below the navel and spins amongst the reproductive organs.

In women, the Sacral Chakra rules the hips and pelvis, the ovaries, and the womb space. In men, it rules the pelvis, testes, and penis. In regard to its positioning, it has a strong impact on intimacy which is closely tied to creative energy.

Although this article is focused on the sacral chakra, it is important to note that the chakra system is interconnected, and having an imbalanced sacral chakra will impact the other chakras in your body. We will look at certain ways that the sacral chakra awakens when chakra healing occurs.

Why is the Sacral Chakra called the Orange Chakra?

The seven chakras are associated with the seven colors of the rainbow. They start with red at the base and then rise through orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, all the way until the color white or gold at the crown. These colors unite to create a rainbow bridge that represents the journey from earth to the sky. Or from the physical body to the energetic soul.

The second chakra is associated with the color orange. The color orange is known for its sensual and creative properties, which are the same qualities that are connected with the sacral chakra. Colors hold unique vibrations, and by wearing the color orange, you are directly stimulating the energy of the second chakra. If this is a chakra you need to bring into balance, try adding some orange clothing into your life. If you are not used to wearing orange, it could be a sign that this energy center needs some focus.

If you are starting with the orange chakra, it may feel uncomfortable to start wearing bright and bold orange clothing, but you can start to work it into your life gently – orange socks and underpants count too!

The Second Chakra – The Seed of Sensual Delights

The energy of the Sacral Chakra is related to intimacy, sensuality, and creative expression. In Sanskrit, it is known as the Svadhisthana Chakra, and in modern yoga, it is commonly referred to as the Passion Chakra. The energy of this chakra determines how you choose to pursue sensual experiences in your life.

This chakra is connected with the water element, as it is related to a sense of energetic flow. Water can be both soft and powerful at the same time, reminding us of our own human ability to be strong and confident in our power, but soft and loving in our hearts.

A Balanced Sacral Chakra – How to find out if you are in balance

A balanced sacral chakra has a smooth energy flow through the body. When thinking about your own sacral chakra, you can consider the following questions:

  • Am I a creative person?
  • Do I allow pleasure into my life?
  • How is my intimate energy flow?
  • How do I express my emotions?
  • Do I have any addictive behaviors?

If your answers to these questions felt emotionally balanced, then it is a good sign that you allow sacral chakra energy to flow naturally through your life. If you felt a block or a strong emotional reaction to one of these questions, then it is likely that you need to dive deeper into this topic.

The Sacral Chakra and the Emotional Body

Emotions are simply energy in motion. They are waves of feelings that rise up within the body to be expressed. A healthy sacral chakra allows all emotions to be felt and expressed in a healthy way. It allows both the strong and giving energy of the masculine to be balanced with the gentle and receiving energy of the feminine.

If you have blocks in the sacral chakra, you may feel that some emotions are not being expressed. For example, perhaps you don’t allow yourself to feel sad or angry. Maybe you block yourself from experiencing joy and connection. To have overall well being, it is important to look at what negative programming has occurred in your sacral chakra, and how to reframe it into a positive way of feeling your emotions.

Intimacy and Creativity – Life Force Energy for the Sacral Chakra

In connection with emotions, the sacral chakra is closely related to your sense of creativity and Intimacy. Passionate energy is a life force energy, it is how we as humans were all created. In this sense, we are also all creative beings, born into a world of wonder. When we are able to keep the natural creative energy in our bodies, we can find a harmonious flow through life. But often due to conditioning, we need to heal the layers of shame, guilt and unfulfillment before we can restore balance and creativity in the sacral chakra.

Sacral Chakra Imbalances – What does that look like?

On a physical level, the sacral chakra is connected to the reproductive organs. This means that it plays a part in romantic desire, libido, and physical functioning. On an energetic level, this energy center rules emotional well being. It has an impact on one’s ability to feel their emotions fully and to express this to the world around them. These are the themes that are affected by a chakra imbalance.

Underactive Sacral Chakra

When speaking of an unbalanced sacral chakra, there are a few things that this can actually mean. A blocked sacral chakra is when the natural life force energy is not flowing through the sacral chakra at all. This can occur when a big blockage arises here due to past experiences, manifested fears, or past or current trauma. When no energy is flowing here, a blocked sacral chakra looks very similar to an underactive sacral chakra. Underactive means that very little energy is flowing through the energy center.

Signs of an underactive sacral chakra include low or no libido, no sensation of pleasure, lack of creativity, hip or pelvic pain, poor functioning of the lymphatic and circulatory systems, emotional depression, feeling overly dependent on someone or something outside of oneself, or lack of inspiration and joy in life.

Overactive Sacral Chakra

If looking at an overactive sacral chakra, we are looking at an experience of being too open in this area and allowing too much energy to flow through the sacral chakra. This overactivity of energy usually will impact the other chakras by creating a lack in other parts of the energetic body.

Symptoms of an overactive sacral chakra include addictions that stimulate the pleasure center (such as food addictions, drugs, and intimacy) and frequent pursuit of pleasure-seeking or risky activities to feed the overactive emotional cravings. It also includes an overactive lymphatic and circulatory system functioning (high blood pressure, excess physical detoxification), and pain and inflammation in the lower belly region (abdominal pain).

How to Rebalance the Sacral Chakra

Balancing the chakras can happen in a number of ways. You can try working with the mudras (hand gestures) for the chakras, lighting an orange candle, chanting mantras, or using specific crystals.

Chakra meditation techniques are also beneficial for restoring balance. For the orange chakra, you can simply focus on an orange colored spinning wheel below the navel for five to ten minutes per day. This will balance the sacral chakra by giving it the focus and attention that it needs.

Essential oils are also great balancers. Scents such as orange, sandalwood, frankincense, clary sage, and cinnamon will balance your sacral chakra. You can apply a few drops into a carrier oil and massage it onto your belly. Or alternatively, put a few drops in a warm bath and enjoy a nice long soak to cleanse your subtle body as well as the physical!

The sacral chakra is related to the water element, so swimming in the ocean, visiting a lake, bathing regularly or dancing in the rain are important to keep a balance in the sacral chakra too.

Crystals such as tiger’s eye, carnelian, calcite, citrine, sunstone, and quartz are orange in color and balance the energy of the orange chakra. You can carry them around with you if working with this energy centre. Alternatively, keep them under your pillow at night, or hold them in meditation.

Yoga poses will help to energize a blocked chakra by awakening the flow of energy through the body. Try this yoga sequence or these individual poses:

Anjaneyasana (Low-Lunge Pose)

This pose opens the hips and pelvic area to allow fresh energy to flow into the sacral chakra.

Baddha Konasana (Bound angle pose)

With open hips, this pose brings space into the sacral chakra. It can also be nice to place your hands over your lower belly here and imagine the orange chakra spinning.

Other ways to incorporate orange chakra energy is through eating orange foods, wearing orange or drawing and painting with orange.
